In a continued attempt at to make a legal gymknana out of autocross, the SCCA is requiring all drivers at Solo events to be SCCA members. Ok, so it can be dangerous, and we all need some kind of insurance. Even those of us who believe we are invincible could be involved in an accident that causes injury or death. Maybe they have a point, but it comes at a cost. That cost is $10 per event for the Johnny-come-lately "Weekend Pass", or just become an SCCA member and get a cool paper card you can show the DPS officer the next time you get pulled over. SCCA membership has its benefits, including the right to hold an office in your local club, insurance at events, a magazine showcasing events and tips, and discount coupons for rental cars. Did I mention the sticker? See SCCA.org for details.

Online Registration is here! Go to the Online Registration link and fill in your information. When you arrive at the event, find your registration form at the table and sign it. Then pay up and you are all set! We will still accept the regular forms, and you still have the option of registering at the event.
We need to boost membership and get the kids active in Autocross. These days, there are a lot of requirements to fulfill their need to be entertained in every way imaginable. Sponsorship dollars are one way to make this happen. The kind of sponsors who cater to trendy automotive events include audio manufacturers, forced-induction suppliers, tire companies, and energy drinks like Monster, Rock Star, and Red Bull . There has also been some talk on one of the forums that there aren't many eligible females at the events, and this need should be met to satify our constituency and boost morale. After all, what's the point of driving a cool car and getting a winning time if there aren't ladies in swimsuits standing by for photo opportunities with you and your trophy?

Here is a vision of how we could run our events in the future.
Picture showing up at your local autocross event and having a DJ with hip hop and surf/skate/drift music blasting across the course at volumes even the guy at workstation 5 can enjoy! Vendors are lined up in the paddock serving energy drinks, displaying shiny exhaust systems, and offering video game tents for visitors. A line of show cars are on the scene, doors folding, paint shifting, suspensions hopping to the beat. Teams of scantily-clad co-eds are strutting around wearing advertisements, offering samples, and handing out sweepstakes cards. Oh, and there's an autocross.

If you look at some of the "tuner lifestyle" events going on, you'll see all this in spades. So why can't we be like that? We can draw the crowds, show up in magazines like "Super Street" instead of GRM, and have a piece of the celebrity pie! Imagine the creativity that would be inspired in the realms of stereos, creative body work, and wings. It could be just what we need to breathe some life back into our beloved sport.

Happy April Fools Day.
