December 4th Driver’s School The December’s event was a driver’s school held at Bisbee / Douglas Airport (BDI). The weather was not just cool, it crossed over into COLD, but it was sunny and dry and helped make it a great day. It was the third training class the club has sponsored at BDI. The class exercises were broken down into three segments, the first segment was all about slaloms or “chicanes”, the second segment was designed around the off-set gates or “lane changes extreme” and the final segment was the dreaded “Chicago Boxes”, then in after session we tied the entire segment together for an Autocross course. We had 15 students, ranging from real beginners to really pretty advanced drivers. Whether you are a beginner or more advanced, everyone learned something that day. A big “thanks” to our instructors: John Lawson, Ric Prussman, Mike Whitehouse, Keith Garraas and Doug McBride. Without their help, this event would not have been a success. The entertainment for the day was the World War 2, Japanese “0” that landed to refuel on the way to Las Vegas, according to the pilot, it was one of three that exist in the United States, pretty cool. Look for our first event of the New Year, it’s scheduled for January 8th, we have requested the Sierra Vista Airport, which is always a great place for autocrossing. Gene Sanders CS Miata
November 6th, 2011 Event The November event was held at Bisbee / Douglas Airport (BDI). The course design came from Shannon Schofield. At first look, it looked to be a horsepower course, “it wasn’t”, there were two sections where the “Chicane’s” needed some self control and when you didn’t, you paid for it by hitting “cones”. As an example; there were 33 cones hit during the day, at our last event at Sierra Vista Airport about the same amount of cones were hit with about twice as many drivers. Still it was a great course, good technical, practice course “Thanks” Shannon. The course basically was second gear course’, some cars needed third gear in sections. The top “Raw” time was Doug McBride driving his Lotus Elise with a 74.089, followed by Nathan Crum in a 2011 Audi S4 with a 75.109, I was lucky enough (the moons were aligned in my favor(smile)) and was the “PAX” Champion with 1000 points for the day. In the Open Class; Alan Bottorff driving a 1999 Miata beat out Randy Price in his Shifter Kart. In the Street Tire class; I edged out Nathan Crum and Doug McBride for 1st. Interesting note, I hit as many cones at this event, as I hit during the last 5 events combined. (Hummmm) In Street Touring; Keith Garass driving a 1997 Miata beat out John Lawson in his 1996 Neon. During “TO’s” Keith put down a very fast raw time of 73.271. Very nice driving, Keith! The Novice Class; first was Jonathon Torres driving a 2006 Mini Cooper, followed by Dan Gibbs in a 2011 Scion TC and third was Mary Banister driving a “very nice” 2003 Corvette. Join the Sierra Sports Car Club at our “Annual Drivers School” on December 4th at Bisbee / Douglas Airport. For just $50, you get a full day of driving with instruction and lunch, everyone could use the practice, so if are an experience auto crosser or just starting out, join us on December 4th. Gene Sanders CS Miata August 7th Event The August event was held at Sierra Vista Airport. The basic course design came from Rob Rockefeller, he couldn’t make the event because of work (don’t you just hate that), but Dave Rock volunteered to be “Chief of Course”, he did a great job of setting up the “Rockefeller Design”. The course basically was second and third gear course. We had a good turnout for the event, 46 regular runs plus a number who signed up for TO’s, the club made the decision to give everyone 4 runs. It was a fairly long course design, times were mostly mid 50’s.
The top “Raw” times were Fred Zust driving the Lotus Dragon with 41.730, followed by Keith Lensch in his Shifter Cart with a 42.038 and third was Julie Wiechert with a 43.764, Fred was the PAX Champion with 1000 points for the day.
The largest group was the Street Tire class; Andy Ross taking 1st driving a Ford Focus with a PAX time of 41.539, second was Scott Meyers driving his “new to him” Mazda 3 with a time of 42.433 and third was Jana Sutton (Mini Cooper) with a time of 42.457, (now that’s close).
In the Open Class,Don Hyland, driving his 2007 Saturn Sky beat out his son and 7 others for first place, with a raw winning time of 48.773.
In Street Touring, Keith Garass, driving his 1997 Miata beat out Travis Kelly for first.
The Novice class, had 12 people running, first was Alex Helms drivng a 07 VW GTI, followed by Jonathon Torres in a 06 Mini Cooper and third was Bob Piotrowsky in a 2010 Genesis. The three PAX times were, 46.4, 46.8 and 47.0, that’s pretty close times.
The ladies division, Susan Love was the class winner with a Raw time of 51.556.
The most competitive class was the PAX Class, where Fred Zust won the class and was the overall PAX Champion for the day. He beat out 6 other drivers, where there was just 3 seconds difference between 1st and 7th.place.
A great time was had by all. Join the Sierra Sports Car Club at our next event on September 11th at Bisbee/Douglas Airport.
Gene Sanders CS Miata, thanks to Alan Bottorff for the day
May 1st Event The May event was held at Bisbee/Douglas Airport (BDI). The basic course design came from Rob Rockefeller, he had designed the course in 2010, then I made a few changes to make a “little different”. The course basically was second and third gear course, with the normal first gear down shifts at the two turn-around’s. There was a small group that showed up for the event, so the club made the decision to give everyone 6 runs, five counted for the results. It was a fairly long course, times were mostly mid 60’s, low seventy seconds. The top raw times were Rob Rockefeller with 60.710, followed by Rob Love with a 61.270 and third were Dave Rock with a 61.713, Dave was the PAX Champion with 1000 points for the day. The largest group was the Street Tire class; Doug McBride taking 1st with a time of 64.425 driving a Lotus Elise, second was John Burbano driving 2009 Z06 Corvette, and third went to Ric Prussman. It was two months in a row, where John finished second in the class. In the Open Class, Rob Love, driving his 2004 EVO beat out Shannon Schofield for first place. In Street Touring, I was lucky enough to beat out Keith Garass, I was put on notice that Keith is going to add coil-over’s to his car, that will make a difference. Michaela Mc Bride was the only ladies division driver; she did a great job driving Ric’s 1994 Miata. A great time was had by all. Join the Sierra Sports Car Club at our next event on June 5th at Bisbee/Douglas Airport. Gene Sanders STR Miata May 1st Event The May event was held at Bisbee/Douglas Airport (BDI). Gene Sanders STR Miata March 6th EventWhat a terrific day to autocross in Sierra Vista, it was a little cool first thing in the morning, but warmed up during the first run group, this event was held at Sierra Vista Airport. We had a nice turn out of people from Tucson and Phoenix area. "Thanks" for supporting our club. Ric Prussman was the Chief of Course for the day; Mark Huffman designed and set up a great course, Mark "Thanks". The course basically was second and third gear course. 44 entrants, with 25 individuals signed up for TO's, it gave everyone plenty of runs. Four runs counted for the regular run groups, it was a fairly long course, but because of the "high" average speed, general times were around high forty to low fifty seconds. The top PAX finishers were running in the PAX Pro-class with Mark Huffman driving his "65" Lotus Elan with a raw time of 46.807 to 1st in the class and overall PAX Champion with 1000 points, with Keith Lensch finishing second with a faster raw time of 45.260, but the PAX numbers made him second. The largest group was the Street Tire class with 10 participants; Jana Sutton taking 1st with a time of 55.548 driving a Mini Cooper, second was John Burbano driving 09 Z06 Corvette. In the Open Class, Ted Lewis driving a 1065 Lotus Elan beats out Rob Love, Don Hyland for first place. In Street Touring, Tim Bergstrom driving a little slower raw time in a 06 Mustang GT beats me on PAX score for first in class. Scott Meyers driving a 07 Mustang finished third. Austin Newmark driving 95 Ford Mustang won the Novice division. Deb Eymann driving 2010 Corvette Grand Sport wins the Ladies Division over Susan Love and Tammy Butterworth. A great time was had by all. Join the Sierra Sports Car Club at our next event on April 3rd at Bisbee/Douglas Airport.

February 6th Event It was a typical "winter" Arizona day, it was very cool first thing in the morning, but warmed up during the first run group, this event was held at Bisbee / Douglas Airport (BDI) on Super Bowl Sunday. Doug McBride (Red Miata driver) was the Chief of Course for the day, designed a great course, the course basically was second and third gear, except for the "turn -around" at each end of the course. 23 entrants, with 14 individuals signed up for TO's, it gave everyone plenty of runs. Five runs counted for the regular run groups, it was a fairly long course, and general times were around mid to high seventy seconds. The top PAX finishers were running in the PAX Pro-class with Jon Eddy driving a 2005 Subaru STI with a raw time of 68.074 to 1st in the class, with Dave Rock finishing second with also a fast time of 69.983 driving his 2001 Toyota Celica. The largest group was the OPEN Tire class with 6 participants; Don Hyland taking 1st with a time of 70.066 driving a Saturn Sky Redline, second was Rob Love driving Mitsubishi EVO. In the Street Tire class, Jana Sutton driving a 2004 Mini Cooper S beats out Perry Wong, John Burbano, David Snyder, and Jack Drummond for first place. In Street Touring, I was lucky enough to beat out Ric Prussman, he was driving my car, and I sure would hate to lose that way. Keith Garaas driving a 1997 Miata finished third. Matthew Crane driving 2005 Honda S2000 won the Novice division. Susan Love was the only Ladies class driver, but she put down a very fast 72.723 in a 2004 EVO. A great time was had by all, and we finished up with plenty of time to have lunch at Jimmy's Hotdogs in Bisbee and still make the kick off of the Super Bowl. Gene Sanders STR Miata March 7th event at BDI The threat of foul weather came thru, no rain, but real high winds, it was the first chance of running on a brand new asphalt surface and it was great, very smooth and with good grip. John Law was the course designer, he put together an nice course, with some slow "technical" sections and some just plain "fast" sections. Most times were in the mid 60's to low 70's area, which made it for a nice long course. John made the statement during the event, on how he could of improved the course, but, don't we all know how to improve a course after you run it 4 times(smile). The "fast time of day" went to Keith Lensch driving a shifter Kart. He told me that it was nice driving on such a smoooooth surface. Top "Pax" honors went to Don Hyland, 63.850 driving his Saturn Sky. Keith Garaas won the Street Tire class driving his 97 Miata to a 69.869. Scott Hutchinson drove over from New Mexico to win the Street Touring class with a time of 66.880. Dave Rock beat out both keith Lensch and Rob Rockefeller in the pro Pax class. Travis Kelly driving an 06 Mazda3 won the Novice class. We had only one ladies class competitor, but Susan Love driving an 04 EVO put down a 66.249, very nice. Overall great event, next time we promise "no wind"(ha). A positive note; great new surface at Bisbee / Douglas Airport, we just need to work on more over lap. Probably the best thing of the day, a large group went over to Jimmy's Hotdogs in Bisbee after the event, after a day in the wind, it was nice to enjoy hotdogs, tell stories (lies) and be out of the wind. Gene (did not race well) Sanders February 7, 2010 BDI Event The threat of foul weather, a venue change, and the Superbowl must have kept folks at home. They missed out on a great course layout dreamed up by King of Speed Don Hyland. There was more ride sharing going on than an HOV lane in rush hour. It made for good competition, reducing the variables in the man vs machine competition. The course consisted of a couple tight kinks, a couple full throttle slaloms, and the obligatory BDI pivots. Don improvised a bit and made the pivots into horseshoes. Cool idea, and it saved the hides of those with no limited slip differential. Times were generally in the low to mid 70's. Those who did well went slow through the tight spots and kept their go pedal to the floor through the rest of the course. You know that feeling you get when you have to tell yourself "Don't lift! Don't lift! Don't lift!" That's what this course was about. Driving my humdrum Mazda 3 for the sake of burning off the rubber, it was shocking how well the course rewarded balance and guts. Ric took a spin in the Mazda 3, and also drove Alan's Miata and BMW convertible. He did unspeakable things with those cars from my vantage point near the south end of the course. For a small fee, I may not publish them. Alan has been showing real improvements in the Mazda, as many people commented, moving his way up the PAX charts with a 77.763. Gene took a couple laps despite his recent surgery. Dale is still running Gene's car until he can get his new project together. It took until the fun runs, but he eventually got down under 70 seconds. Don Hyland pulled off the FTD, 65.077 with Doug McBride nipping at his heels in that crazy supercharged red Miata. Doug was pushing at 101%, and kept his car pointed in the right direction for a 66.532. Then he borrowed Keith's Miata and showed him that there was more to learn to the tune of about three seconds. Now I've ridden along with Keith, and he's no slouch! I would say that he won the STS class, but if the Miata is an STS car, I'm still looking for the back seat. Gene was the only other sub-70 second driver during timed runs, with a 68.320. Tammy joined in the ride swapping fun and got to drive Don's Sky with a time of 75.113. Some of our new regulars are also making improvements, notably Phil Bohn in the Pontiac G6. He took the novice win with a 77.779. He pulled out a 75.5 in TOs. We'll see you next time, at a yet to be decided venue. John Lawson August 2, 2009 Event Recap Twenty drivers made the haul out to the Bisbee-Douglas Airport to see what kind of course Gene Sanders cooked up for us. To take things in a different direction, the course started from the paddock by heading left up the taxiway. There were a couple three cone slaloms mixed with a Chicago box, a Bisbee Box (?) and an hourglass pivot. The other side of the course started with a decidedly tight kink exit, a Bisbee Box and a pivot, ending with plenty of room to slow down and come back in to the pit. Because of the extraordinary grip and finesse required to get through the Chicago box and kink without scrubbing too much speed, cars with proper tires and drivers with tight lines were rewarded with sub 60 second lap times. The whole course was also deceptively fast, and the first pivot was very tricky to get right because of the difficulty in judging where to brake. It was fun and challenging, and notoriously hard to get through quickly without biffing a cone at said tight spots. Despite being notably confused about the left-hand start, Keith Lensch made short work of the course and took top honors in time and PAX with a 50.967 run. Rob Rockefeller came out for a second helping of BDI and took second in time and PAX with a 58.228. Plagued by pylons, Rob could have had a 57, but clean runs were an anomaly for most of us. Doug McBride got third top time with a 58.605 and Don Hyland took third top PAX with a 58.859. Otherwise, there were plenty of new faces and cars to see, though many of our regulars had something else going on this weekend. We never really know how word gets out about these events, but sure enjoy sharing stories and checking out everyone's pride and joy. We like it when people bring homemade cookies, too! With a little luck we will have our next event at Buena High School. I'll be doing another pretzel logic course. Bring something the high school students will enjoy riding along in! John Lawson June 7th, 2009 Event
June 7th at Bisbee Douglas International Airport started off early for a change, with all participants registered and out walking the course by 9:00AM. As a result, we were already sending the first car down range at 9:30. BDI courses ultimately become exercises in designing around broken concrete and weed clumps, so the planned course layout was scrapped on the outbound side. A forest has grown up through the area where we used to have a patch of useable concrete. The unworkable course element was replaced by a sideways gate, which worked out really well. Thanks to adequate participation, the course was made long enough to really turn up the heat on the inbound leg. Leaving the start line, there was a wide right hand sweep leading to the starting lights on the course proper. There was a set of close, decreasing distance slalom cones that forced the driver to maintain a constant speed for best results. The sideways gate required abrupt turns of the wheel to get lined up for the pivot. Returning to the kink, some folks managed to stay at full throttle into the straight leading up to the fast slalom. Those with courage, smooth inputs, and reasonable rubber were able to take the whole slalom at full throttle, then slow down in time to pivot and slalom back through the finish somewhere in third gear. Times ranged from 56 seconds to over 70. There were several comments that Harry Berzes's design was the most thoughtful and fun course at BDI to date.
April 5th EventDespite having a Corvette on stock suspension, Dave Rock pulled off the top time of the day, followed closely by Rob Rockefeller in his S2000. Rob took top PAX, followed by Dave, and Don Hyland took third. There was the usual car swapping. Gene Sanders brought his daughter and her significant other out to run the fat-tired Miata. Gene took a couple runs in Alan Bottorff's BMW for old time's sake, Rick Prussman tried out the Street Mod CRX, and I showed Adam Buxbaum the potential of his 350Z. There were two mechanical casualties, victims of the BDI curse as it were. On the flip side, I finally found a homegrown solution to my car's power steering problem, so now the sky is the limit! If a car can pass stress tests a BDI, it's more or less indestructible. We have been pulling in a pretty good novice group this year, which is always encouraging. We hope to see many of them next month at the Sierra Vista Airport if we can secure the site. Stay tuned, and stay updated on AZSOLO.COM/FORUMS John Lawson Bisbee/Douglas International Airport April 5, 2009 The morning started off with barely enough participants to cover all the bases, until the distant roar of about seven cars caravanning from Tucson and Phoenix showed up in the middle of the driver's meeting. Everyone scrambled to get them registered and teched, and we had a proper event with 23 entrants. With plenty of new autocrossers and a fast layout, the course went hot with Harry Berzes in his traditional A1 Steak Sauce fashion. The course started with a couple of fast bends and a slalom, followed by a drag strip straight and a brake check kink. There was a tight slalom, a 180 pivot, and the course returned back to the start area where a Chicago Box kept the speed safe around the van and fire hydrant. From there, it was a quick trip out to another Chicago Box, and a gate on the left led way out to a clockwise pivot. The course returned through the Chicago Box and it was a straight shot to the finish. Braking light and early before the sharp turns allowed drivers to carry plenty of speed through the course, as most tricky elements had straights on both sides of them. Don Hyland took advantage of high horsepower and enormous grip, piloting his Saturn Sky to the 74.5 second TTD and top PAX to boot. Dale Willey went out with the first run group in his Stalker with some fresh R compound tires and wrestled a 78.2 on his timed runs. Gene Sanders drove the car later and attributed all the success to Dale's driving- Gene couldn't sort out the Stalker's quirks. Gene's car suffered mechanical difficulties, but not before he ripped a 78.7 on his first run in the big-tired Miata. Billowing smoke and puking power steering fluid, my Hoosier-shod Neon tripped the lights at 78.8 for second place PAX. James Hayden and Harry Steiner also put in stunning performances in the mid 78 second range. The Novice class was sizeable thanks to all the late arrivals. Steve Sinko put in a noteworthy performance in his BMW 325i to take first in Novice. Tammy Butterworth in the Ladies Class held the heat under Ric Prussman's feet, threatening to show him who's boss on course as well as at home, but Ric narrowly escaped with a better time. Gina Negron on the other hand, showed up her co driver Antwon Boyd in their EVO X in Novice. Other than Gene's Miata going back to the shop, there were no blown motors or catastrophic failures, which is notable for the notorious BDI. A big thanks to Alan Bottorff for posting results in a flash and getting some great photos of the action when he wasn't busy driving. We'll see you next month at the Sierra Vista Airport. John Lawson February 1rst, Buena HS; It was a sunny Arizona day, also Super Bowl Sunday, this event was held at Buena High School parking lot, co- sponsored by the "VICA" Buena car club, a little cold during set up, but it warmed up nicely. Our club president "John Lawson" was the Chief of Course for the day, designed a nice course, the course basically was second gear, except for a 360" circle just before the finish. Fairly small turn out, probably a combination of having the event, on Super Bowl Sunday and having it on a small event site. Just 17 entrants, but, it gave everyone plenty of runs. It figured out to be 4 timed runs with 4 fun runs (at no extra charge). The SSCC members were able to give the VICA Club members plenty of seat time as riders. We had a visitor from the State of New Mexico, David Seybold driving a 2006 Stalker, running E-mod, he ended up as the "fast time of the day", posting an impressive 34.025. Another fast time, was posted by Don Hyland, driving 2007 Sky Redline on race rubber, his time was 34.870 which was good enough for the top "PAX" time of the day. The course designer John Lawson nailed down the street tire class driving his 1996 Neon with a 37. 933 and the winner of the Novice class went to Ray Steele driving a 2005 Subaru WRX. A great time was held by all, and we finished up with plenty of time to catch the Super Bowl Game. Gene Sanders March 1rst event: It was a cool and windy morning at Bisbee/Douglas, and there were cones laid out as far as the eye could see in both directions standing at the kink. 1.5 miles, supposedly. Walking the course was not for the weary. By 10:00 AM, twenty drivers had shown up, and a few spectators wandered in throughout the day. The north side of the course had some chicanes, a slalom, and a pivot, with the chicane causing no small number of CD's. A carefully placed line would put you through the kink flat out, tickling a long row of cones through to the exit. Then it was a very fast weave through wide gates to another pivot, and power out towards the finish. The second to last gate was offset just enough to cause a lot of skids, spins, and upsets, but a light brake and smooth handwork allowed one to stay in third and ease through the finish without complaint from tire or chassis. Don Hyland managed to beat out Jeff Israel for the top raw time, a 76.0. Jeff's 77.8 was enough to earn him top PAX and the last laugh. Don got 2nd PAX, with Dave Rock, John Lawson, and Andy Ross taking third through fifth. Also notable, Alex Walsh took an older Audi A4 to win the Novice class; Leo Barron grabbed street tire (on Yokohama A048s mind you); and Susan Love won the ladies class in her EVO VIII. Speaking of the infamous EVO, husband Rob took the third fastest raw time with a 78.4. Nothing broke, though Gene will be sourcing a new clutch. The timing display did it's thing, the new van is proving to be a welcome addition, and we drew some new drivers out of the woodwork to come and play. All around, it was a fantastic event that allowed everyone to really open the throttle and hang on for dear life! See y'all next month at the Buena High School. There has been some concern during the past year about the SSCC's ability to hold regular events. This has been due to diminishing course venue options. As you probably know, we have been prohibited from running on military airfields by regulation. While it was once an option depending on who was running the base, it is now out of the question. There was talk about losing some or all of our access to The Sierra Vista Airport. The Border Patrol wants to move from their chopper from Libby field to the municipal side, or so the story goes. Fontunately, it hasn't happened- yet. We may still be able to use most of the airport regardless of new occupants. There was a brief scare that we might lose Greeley Hall on base, but it appears to have been a communication breakdown. Finally, we have BDI and Buena High School, which are polar opposites in terms of surface and speed, but neither are particularly well-suited to our sport. So we have scary monsters for Halloween- specters, if you will. Fortunately, there are still enough places to run to keep things interesting. If there's one thing you can count on out here, it's variety. Two Steps Forward, One Step Back! |
